The Future Is Here

As Minister of Planning and Development, Beckles has been at the forefront of implementing strategic national development plans. One of her key contributions has been her role in the development of Vision 2030, the country’s long-term strategic plan aimed at achieving sustainable growth and development over the next decade. Vision 2030 outlines specific targets and indicators for various sectors, including education, health, infrastructure, and the economy. Beckles' leadership in driving this plan forward has been vital in ensuring that Trinidad and Tobago remains focused on its developmental goals.

Beckles has been a strong advocate for economic diversification, particularly given Trinidad and Tobago’s reliance on oil and gas revenues. Recognizing that the country must reduce its dependency on the energy sector, she has supported initiatives aimed at promoting other industries such as agriculture, tourism, and technology. Through strategic planning, Beckles has worked to create an environment conducive to investment and entrepreneurship, fostering innovation and growth in non-energy sectors. Her efforts have contributed to the creation of jobs and the expansion of the country's economic base.

Under Beckles’ leadership, the Ministry of Planning and Development has been involved in numerous infrastructure projects aimed at improving the country’s roads, transportation systems, and public facilities. These initiatives have had a direct impact on the quality of life for citizens in both urban and rural areas. By prioritizing infrastructure development, Beckles has helped pave the way for greater economic activity and access to services for underserved communities.

Beckles is a proponent of social welfare programs that aim to reduce poverty and inequality in Trinidad and Tobago. Through her work as an MP and Minister, she has advocated for policies that promote social inclusivity and ensure that the most vulnerable members of society have access to opportunities for advancement.  On Tuesday, November 5, 2024, at the beautiful Crews Inn Hotel & Yachting Centre in Point Gourde, Chaguaramas, Trinidad & Tobago, I had the distinct honor of attending the Maroon Indigenous Gathering & Conference, themed “Envisioning a Connected Maroon Diaspora & a Reparative Future.”

The guiding theme of the conference, “Strengthening Ties, Acknowledging Roots: A Future Forged in Unity and Understanding,” resonated deeply as we explored ways to enhance our bonds and heritage. 

Hon. Pennelope Beckles' leadership has had a transformative impact on Trinidad and Tobago. As a Member of Parliament, she has been a tireless advocate for her constituents in Arima, addressing local issues while simultaneously contributing to the national dialogue on development. Through her work in the Ministry of Planning and Development, Beckles has played a key role in shaping the country’s economic and social trajectory, ensuring that policies are not only forward-looking but also inclusive and sustainable.

Beckles' commitment to gender equality and empowerment has also made her a role model for many young women in Trinidad and Tobago. Her leadership serves as an example of how women can excel in political and leadership positions, breaking barriers and contributing to the development of their nations. Her advocacy for women’s rights, along with her broader focus on sustainable development, has positioned her as a forward-thinking leader who is deeply invested in the future of Trinidad and Tobago.
